The inland historic capital and the beach town of Torre del Mar sit about 4 km apart and feel like two different towns under one municipal name.Torre del Mar is first a summer resort for Spanish domestic tourists. It is also a real, lived in town for the rest of the year. It is the second largest population centre in the municipality, with permanent neighbourhoods, not just holiday beds.
High season brings real crowds and a lively nightlife strip along El Copo. Bars are open until 6am, and a night market runs to 3am. Quieter pockets exist nearby in Almayate and Benajarafe Alto for buyers who want calm instead.About 13 percent of the municipality's population is foreign born. Moroccan, Argentine, British, Romanian and German residents are the largest groups. This is a majority Spanish, family and agricultural town first, with tourism layered on top rather than the other way around.
