Casares has two separate parts that do not meet. One is a hilltop white village, roughly 12 to 15 km from a coastal strip between Estepona and Sotogrande. About 34 percent of residents are foreign born.The pueblo has a Spanish character, with narrow, steep streets and a Moorish-era castle. It is the birthplace of Blas Infante. Both the Andalusian regional parliament and the national Spanish parliament recognise him as the father of the Andalusian homeland. His birth house is now a museum in the village.
Casares Costa has mostly Northern European retirees, digital nomads and remote professionals. It also attracts second home and rental investors. The Finca Cortesin area attracts a smaller, more affluent international buyer group for golf and resort living.Local marketing focuses on genuine history. This includes the 1361 Pact of Casares between King Pedro I of Castile and Muhammed V of Granada. It also includes a legend that Julius Caesar founded the nearby thermal baths and the Lacipo Roman archaeological site.
